1. WHEELCHAIRS Wheel chairs are something I'M not in reality qualified to review, but, seeing as I utilized one for about a year or two, I feel qualified. Wheelchairs are a kinda personal thing. I imagine those who are bound to one, often, can think of the wheelchair as being part of them kinda like a third leg, or something . Now, I don't know if I'D go as far as saying, or considering, it part of my body, but, I imagine there DO exist those who may even give their wheelchairs names such as ol' trusty rusty, or something equally as silly as that. Now, there was a time when I wondered IF I'D ever walk again. Because it was almost a full year before I started using a WALKER. And I still don't know why it took THAT long. THEY, whoever THEY are always say typically someone with a TBI is healed almost completely within the first two years, but, I'M here to tell you "THEY'VE" gotta be wrong. Because I'D say it took me a good, or bad year, I can never remember anymore, before I "GRADUATED" to a WALKER. Which conveniently, leads me into my next review.
2. WALKERS I know my review of wheelchairs wasn't much, but, maybe a year or two of being wheelchair bound doesn't really qualify me to review them. After all I'M much more qualified to review WALKERS especially since I'VE been through about four or five of them. We've gotten to the point where we just buy me a new one every year, just about, instead of hassling the people who sold them to me about fixing them. Even though, they can be expensive. And you'd think that for the price you pay, anywhere from about $200.00 to upwards of $600.00, that the seller would service them for free. However, everyone's gotta make a living, and at the rate I go through walkers, any MEDICAL supply store that sells walkers would soon go out of business. So I recommend either hurry up and start walking safely with a cane, or get a damn good warranty on your walker. Especially if you get one of these new fangled kind like I use that has an excellent utility basket, and brakes on both handles, of course not many can afford one of these fancy shmancy walkers like mine, after all, I was born with a SILVER SPOON IN MY MOUTH, don't ya know! So those of us TBIers who are unfortunate enough to need a walker often times must use one of the older types you might see your granny using. You know the ol' ALUMINUM pieces of crap walkers you, or at least I always did, associated with nursing homes , or what's the politically correct term for them these days EXTENDED CARE FACILITIES ? Yeah, I think that's the correct term .
3. CANES Now many people use canes. Unfortunately, I have such balance problems, that sometimes even sitting on my shower bench is a problem for me, especially when I'M trying to dry my feet, as I can't stand up to dry off, like I used to pre TBI . I'M just blessed that I can sit there long enough to clean myself. I learned a long time ago that I NEED to sit down to perform any task, often such tasks that many people take for granted. Things as mundane as getting a dish out of a cabinet, That's where my WALKER REALLY comes in handy as it's got a seat on it also, which I almost forgot to mention, well, I did forget to mention it in that paragraph up there. Anyway, you can get walkers with a seat, sometimes a soft seat, often times a hard seat, but, I probably sit down on my walker more than anything else. And it's a good thing it's got a seat because, I can sit down on it to do almost anything, like (don't tell my wife this) put away the dishes or worse the clean laundry. I hate, with a passion, folding clothes. I'VE tried to put away the clean dishes, but, after, I broke a few good dishes, I was asked not to do this job. Besides, that's what the kids are for.(not) Well, I can't think of much of anything else that I utilize a great deal of the time, but, IF I think of anything that I feel y'all should know about I'LL just review it for y'all.
These were mostly just reviews of walking aides, but, since I'VE already reviewed most everything else that has proved useful to me, I thot I'D NOT like people to think I'M still PERSEVERATING, even tho I do a lot. I'M hoping those reviews will prove useful to TBIers like me. Bye!_______________
